The International Union of Journalists and Writers has issued an urgent appeal demanding the immediate and unconditional access of international journalists and independent media to the Gaza Strip. The Union emphasized that Israel’s ongoing ban on media entry is not about protecting journalists’ safety, as it claims, but rather a calculated effort to conceal the truth — the genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity being committed daily against the Palestinian people.
According to the Union, 230 Palestinian journalists have been deliberately killed since the start of the Israeli assault, many along with their families. This represents an unprecedented attack on press freedom, revealing the deep fear within Israel’s military establishment of the camera lens exposing reality to the world.
Under the pretext that “Gaza is unsafe,” Israel continues to block access to international media, enforcing a complete blackout to prevent documentation of the humanitarian catastrophe — including mass civilian casualties, destruction of health infrastructure, and deliberate starvation tactics.
The Union highlights that this blackout constitutes a blatant violation of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to “seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
It calls on the global community of journalists to act immediately:
“The free word is the last line of defense against genocide. It’s time to break the silence. Entering Gaza is not just a right for journalists — it is a duty for every human with a conscience.”
