Overview of the International Union of Journalists and Writers
The International Union of Journalists and Writers (IUJW) is an independent, non-governmental, and non-profit international organization, founded in 2014 by Dr. Daher Saleh Muhamed to serve as a leading global voice in defending freedom of expression and protecting the rights of journalists and writers worldwide. The Union was established with a clear vision to create a safe and flexible space for media professionals and creatives who sometimes risk their lives to convey the truth, in a world where restrictions on press freedom are increasing. Its current headquarters is located in Brussels, Belgium, where it continues its international activities in support of free media.
The Union’s mission is to promote the foundations of free and responsible journalism as a cornerstone of democracy and human rights. It works to protect journalists, defend their professional rights, and strengthen international communication to address threats facing the press—especially in conflict zones—while resisting all attempts to restrict or silence it. The Union also carries out global campaigns in support of human rights, and is committed to upholding professional and ethical standards in journalism by fostering accuracy and objectivity, thereby reinforcing public trust in the media.
The Union actively combats all forms of hatred and extremism through purposeful media that promotes tolerance and respect among nations. In its efforts to support professional development, it organizes specialized training courses and workshops to enhance the skills of journalists and writers, helping them meet new challenges in the media landscape. It also collaborates with other international journalistic and media organizations, such as the International Federation of Journalists, to strengthen press rights on a global scale.
Today, the Union represents more than 9,000 journalists and writers from various countries, providing them with legal protection and practical support when facing persecution or threats. Through its initiatives and wide network of partnerships, the International Union of Journalists and Writers continues to serve as a guardian of free speech and a protector of media rights, contributing to the creation of a global media culture that supports justice, peace, and sustainable development.
